History Of Amcha Ghar

The concept of ‘Amcha Ghar (Our Home)’ originated out of personal experiences of Mr. and Mrs. Dias (presently the trustee of Amcha Ghar in 1996. The trustee approached several institutions and organization to provide shelter for semi orphan and orphan girls from the streets and pavement of Mumbai. The girls were denied admission because of:

  1. Having a single parent.
  2. There being no room to accommodate them.
  3. Being orphan.

This  situation prevails even today. They further discovered that their own relatives of the children were sexually exploiting these girls, because of the very nature of their situation of having a single parent. It was these revelations and helplessness to find a home for these children that inspired the trustee (Mr. Anthony Dias and Mrs. Agatha Sushila Anthony Dias) to form a unique organization. It was called ‘Amcha Ghar’ ‘Our Home’ which was started on 14 April 1996.

Amcha Ghar provides residence, English Medium education, Medical, Self defense  and spiritual facilities in a homely atmosphere to the girls, till the time they become independent. In another words, it works for holistic development of orphan and semi-orphan girls at a residential home. The home functions under Juvenile Justice Act (JJ Act). The girls that come to Amcha Ghar are under the sanction order of Child Welfare Committee (CWC). All the girls in Amcha Ghar have been receiving English Medium Education  at Amcha Ghar English High School and Junior College. A lot of sessions, workshops, events, etc. are held every monthly for them to develop sense of responsibility and to create awareness about the where about of the world. These girls are also into extracurricular activities and each and every girl in Amcha Ghar are Goal Oriented.
